102 Not Out Review: Amitabh Plays A Cool Daddy Again
Critic’s Rating: 3.5/5
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Jimit Trivedi
Director: Umesh Shukla
The aura of Amitabh Bachchan as Young Angry Man has passed and now he is playing the roles of a cool father in most of his movies. Amitabh has played the role of a friendly father in Baghban, Baabul, Piku and now 102 Not Out.
The Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor starrer film is about the simple joys of living. Director Umesh Shukla casts Amitabh and Rishi as a father and son, who were last seen together in the Shashi Kapoor-directed film Ajooba. Dhiru (Jimit Trivedi), played the role of a helper at a chemist is a constant witness of the love-hate relationship of father and son.
This 102-minute film is yet another adaptation of a Gujarati play written by Saumya Joshi and stars Mukesh Hariawala and Jimit Trivedi in the film. 102 Not Out is about Dattatreya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan), a 102-year-old man wanting to beat the world record for the oldest man alive of a Chinese man. For which, he decides to send his 75-year-old boring son Babulal (Rishi Kapoor) to an old-age home. Dattaraya is a man full of aspirations and dreams, while his cynical son is cautious and lacks lust of life.
In order to stay back, Babulal had to agree on few terms and conditions set by his father. The terms proved to be a lesson on life skills for Babulal and how to rise above the bitter memories and cherish the sweet ones. Rishi Kapoor is what sustains our interest when the humor evaporates and is a plus point for the film. The narrative of the film starts off as comedy and winds up as an emotional melodrama.
Babulal Vakharia is a former mathematics teacher who walks down memory lane alone to complete his challenges. The film looks pushy at certain places but leaves a great message for the society. Babulal must complete a set of tasks to avoid his fate.
In the film, we see glimpses of Babulal’s past life, and possibly his future. Sadly, we do not see anything about Dattatreya’s life. The ending of the film is not the expected one and is rather eccentric. The film has a universal appeal and is a light-hearted family drama. In the last, the age of course, as they say, is just a number. The film is out today, go and enjoy it with your family.
